There May Be an Obi-Wan Kenobi 'Star Wars' Trilogy In the Works

Last month, we learned that Disney and Lucasfilm had begun work on an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff movie, diverting from their original plan to avoid Jedi and Sith in Star Wars spinoff movies. From what was reported then, the popularity of Kenobi was too high to ignore. Based on a new report on Monday, that popularity might be even harder to ignore than we thought — there's now talk of an Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy.

Cinelinx reported on Monday that its sources have told the site: "First up, they are not talking about an Obi-Wan spin-off movie but a trilogy of Obi-Wan movies. I need to stress that these movies are not connected. They aren't part of a story arc but 3 separate Obi-Wan adventures set between Episodes III and IV. ... One set completely on Tatooine and two where Obi-Wan travels elsewhere in the Galaxy. ... Qui-Gon Jinn is very much present in these stories. So too is Owen Lars. Several characters from the Clone Wars TV show would make an appearance. There would be flashbacks to Obi-Wan fighting in the Clone Wars."

I'm more excited over the prospect of a series of Kenobi movies than I am any other spinoff. Don't get me wrong, what we're hearing about the Sequel Trilogy, the launch of Star Wars Rebels and the talented directors Disney and Lucasfilm have brought in to direct possible spinoffs about Yoda, Boba Fett or Han Solo make this the most exciting time to be a Star Wars fan ever.

That said, Obi-Wan is the most exciting character for spinoff movies with the richest story yet to be told. There's no way he waited on Tatooine for decades until R2-D2 decided to seek him out in Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. If part of this rumor is that this Kenobi trilogy will feature characters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, think of the possibilities. Captain Rex. Ahsoka Tano. Darth Maul. C'mon, do you really think Star Wars resurrected the iconic Sith lord just for a few episodes of The Clone Wars?

With the rumored time setting for a Kenobi trilogy, Ewan McGregor is in the perfect place to reprise the role. He's up for it too, previously saying, "Yeah. Of course. I mean, if they needed me, I would be up for it. Of course. If Obi-Wan Kenobi's in them, it can't be Alec Guinness, sadly, anymore, so I would do it. ... I wouldn't want someone else to do it." At just 43, McGregor can keep playing the first Jedi Star Wars fans ever met for years.

Cinelinx does note that this news should still be classified as a rumor, with reporter Jordan Maison offering his opinion that this rumor is based off a ton of concept art being worked up for a single Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Lucasfilm has yet to announce which Star Wars spinoff movies directors Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank will helm — we'll have to wait and see if one of the is about Obi-Wan.
