X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Casting: Chloe Grace Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld and Elle Fanning in the Running for Young Jean Grey

After successful bringing younger versions of Mystique, Charles Xavier and Magneto to life with Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, the X-Men franchise is looking to duplicate that feat with Jean Grey and Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse. Director Bryan Singer is looking at three actresses — Chloe Grace Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld and Elle Fanning — and three actors — Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe and Timothee Chalamet — for the two roles, according to TheWrap.

Sources tell TheWrap that both Moretz and Fanning have met with Singer over the past few weeks. No offers have been made at this point.

When it comes to his wishlist for Jean Grey, Singer has assembled an impressive group.

Moretz became a pop culture favorite after playing Hit Girl in Kick-Ass. Since then, the actress had steadily built a résumé that includes superhero movies, young adult adaptions and big-budget films. Before the Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast was announced, Moretz's name was constantly brought up for the movie. Those rumors especially made sense when Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn was in the running to helm Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Vaughn directed X-Men: First Class and was a producer on X-Men: Days of Future Past — could his connection to Moretz be enough to land her the role of Jean Grey?

Steinfeld and Fanning would both be big gets for X-Men: Apocalypse. Steinfeld received an Oscar nomination for True Grit at age 14. Fanning is the younger sister of Dakota Fanning and held her own opposite of Angelina Jolie in this year's Maleficent.

The names rumored for the young Cyclops aren't all that exciting. Hardy, Rowe and Chalamet have portfolios made up of bit parts in movies and TV shows. Singer clearly wants to land a big name for Jean Grey, but would be content with a newcomer for Cyclops.

We've also heard that a young version of Storm will be introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse. There are a lot of people pulling for Lupita Nyong'o to win that role, but she might be too busy with the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. Then again, Lawrence has been able to juggle the X-Men franchise and the Hunger Games franchise.
