AMERICAN SNIPER Has $64.3M 2nd Weekend; Becomes Clint Eastwood's Biggest Box Office Hit

Michael Moore may hate American Sniper, but North American moviegoers still flocked to see the Chris Kyle biopic this past weekend. The movie grossed $64.3 million during its second weekend in wide release, bringing American Sniper's domestic total gross up to $200.1 million.

The $64.3 million ranks as the eighth best second weekend in domestic history, trailing The Avengers ($103.1 million), Avatar ($75.6 million), The Dark Knight ($75.2 million), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($74.2), Iron Man 3 ($72.5 million), Shrek 2 ($72.2 million) and Spider-Man ($71.4 million).

American Sniper now ranks as the all-time highest grossing movie domestically for Clint Eastwood as a director. Despite the critical praise that Eastwood has (sometimes) received as a director, his films haven't always been huge box office hits. Prior to American Sniper taking the top spot, Gran Torino was previously Eastwood's biggest box office hit, grossing $148.1 million.

In all likelihood, American Sniper will hold onto the No. 1 spot at the box office again next weekend, with only Project Almanac, The Loft and Black or White opening as new challengers.
