First ANT-MAN Trailer Has Arrived!
"I need you to be the Ant-Man."
Those seven words will launch the next franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, spoken by Michael Douglas in the first trailer for Ant-Man. That trailer, which was released during the premiere of Agent Carter on Tuesday night, introduced the world to Douglas' Hank Pym and Paul Rudd's Scott Lang.
After being production for a decade and losing director Edgar Wright just a few months ago, Ant-Man has been the target of critics just looking for Marvel Studios' first big mistake.
Any thought that Ant-Man is going to be that failure should have been erased with this trailer. Director Peyton Reed appears to have made a movie that not only has heart (Scott Lang with his daughter, sniff) but also a sense of history that we really having gotten from the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet. Douglas' Pym is about to become the grandfather of the Avengers, with knowledge ready to pass onto Lang as he becomes Ant-Man.
Excuse me — THE Ant-Man. I love that.
And I love Rudd and Douglas in this trailer. I know it's short, just under two minutes long, but the duo is perfectly cast. Chalk up another two great casting moves for Marvel Studios. If Robert Downey Jr. is nearing the end of his time as the star of the Cinematic Universe, Paul Rudd isn't a bad choice to have waiting in the wings.
From what we've heard, Ant-Man is going to be a heist film, with Scott and Hank joining forces to "protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats ... and pull off a heist that will save the world." This would continue the recent trend of Marvel Cinematic Universe films expanding beyond being just superhero movies and tackling additional genres. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, for example, was also a political thriller.
Ant-Man will hit theaters on July 17. In addition to Douglas and Rudd, the film stars Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale and Judy Greer.
