FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Plummets in Second Weekend but Still Holds Top Box Office Spot
Looks like the majority of moviegoers who wanted to sit in a theater with a bunch of strangers and watch porn did it last weekend. After setting a record for biggest February opening weekend with $85.2 million, Fifty Shades of Grey plummeted a whopping 72.7 percent. Fifty Shades of Grey grossed just $23.2 million over its second weekend — which was still good enough to score first place.
The three top earners from last weekend held over this weekend, with Kingsman: The Secret Service and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water following Fifty Shades of Grey with $17.5 million and $15.5 million.
The weekend's three new wide releases couldn't compete with those holdovers. McFarland, USA and The Duff each opened around $11 million. The biggest disappointment of the weekend was Hot Tub Time Machine 2. The first Hot Tub Time Machine was a cult hit, but that film still opened to $14 million. The sequel could only muster up $5.8 million.
