CINDERELLA Belle of the Box Office With $70.1M Opening Weekend

Sixty-five years later and Cinderella still reigns at the box office. Disney's live-action adaptation of Cinderella debuted with a $70.1 million opening weekend. Nothing else came close to the film this past weekend.

An opening weekend this big for a live-action adaption of one of its classic animated films should alleviate any concerns Disney had over continuing this trend. A live-action Beauty and the Beast starring Harry Potter's Emma Watson? Slot that for at least $70 million when the movie opens.

Cinderella's opening weekend is a high mark for Kenneth Branagh. The director's previous best debut was Thor's $65.7 million in 2011.

Beyond Cinderella, the rest of the top five weren't much to talk about. Liam Neeson's Run All Night could only stumble to a $11 million opening weekend. (Yes, that's a run pun.) Kingsman: The Secret Service continued to show remarkable staying power, grossing $6.2 million for a domestic gross of $107.4 million. Focus followed with $5.8 million for the weekend and $44. million total.

Last week's No. 1 Chappie dropped 56.5 percent for a $5.8 million. The film's grossed just $23 million total at the domestic box office. That amount doesn't even match what director Neill Blomkamp's first two movies grossed their opening weekend.
