REPORT: Alexandre Desplat Composing STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Score for Gareth Edwards

John Williams' work on the first Star Wars movie won him an Oscar for Best Original Score in 1978. Overall, the composer has won five Academy Awards and scored not only the six original Star Wars movies but is also currently at working scoring Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Williams is about to get some Oscar-winning company in the Star Wars universe. According to a report by Radio Classique (via Making Star Wars), Alexandre Desplat will be composing the score for the franchise's first spinoff, Star Wars: Rogue One. Lucasfilm hasn't confirmed the news yet, but Desplat told Radio Classique that he'll be reteaming with Gareth Edwards, his Godzilla director, for the first Star Wars standalone movie.

Desplat has been nominated for eight Oscars for Best Original Score, winning this past February for The Grand Budapest Hotel. He also composed the music for the final two Harry Potter movies, Zero Dark Thirty and ... um ... The Twilight Saga: New Moon. I guess we all have our skeletons.

Could Desplat scoring Star Wars: Rogue One be a sign of new composing talent working on future Star Wars movies? Williams has only been confirmed to be working on The Force Awakens.
