Asa Butterfield Is the New SPIDER-MAN ... Maybe?

Asa Butterfield is on the verge of becoming the new Spider-Man.

Maybe ...

There were conflicting reports over whether the Hugo actor had landed the role in Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Latino-Review reported with 100 percent certainty on Thursday night that Butterfield would be Spider-Man, and Deadline jumped in to declare that the actor was in talks with Marvel and Sony.

Several pop culture reporters quickly tweeted that while Butterfield was a finalist for the role of Spider-Man, a deal wasn't done and there were still other candidates in the running.

Butterfield's name first popped up for Spider-Man toward the end of April. At the time, he was lumped in with Nat Wolff, Tom HollandTimothee Chalamet and Liam James. The Ender's Game actor earned frontrunner status a week later.

The new Spider-Man is expected to make his debut in Captain America: Civil War, but when Marvel Studios announced the movie's massive cast last week, the studio didn't announce an actor to play the webslinger. Marvel hasn't locked in an actor to follow in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's footsteps, and it's likely the studio will make the casting of a new Spider-Man a big announcement.

Is Butterfield the new Spider-Man? It seems likely. Seeing pop culture reporters like Adam B. Vary, Anthony Breznican and Germain Lussier put themselves out there to say that a deal isn't done yet should give everyone pause though. Don't put too much work into your Photoshops of Butterfield hanging out with Iron Man and Captain America just yet.

After having a small role in Captain America: Civil War, the rebooted Spider-Man will get a standalone movie in 2017. We last heard that Marvel and Sony are looking at Jonathan Levine, Ted Melfi, Jason Moore, the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, and Jared Hess to direct the film.
