Weekend Box Office Roundup (May 4-6)

1. The Avengers (1)
$207.44 million ($207.44 million)
Well, this one shouldn't be a surprise. As we moved into opening weekend (and especially after Friday's $80.5 million number came in), it was clear that The Avengers had set its sights on several records. The question was which records it would take down. Now we know: Biggest opening weekend ever, first movie to open over $200 million, biggest May opening, biggest Saturday, biggest Sunday, best three-day gross, quickest to $100 million, $150 million and $200 million. And that's just over the movie's first three days. More records are going to fall over the next few days and weeks.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Avatar has the record for biggest second weekend with $75.62 million, with The Dark Knight close behind with $75.17. The Avengers' strongest challenger next weekend will be Johnny Depp's Dark Shadows. The previous top opening weekend record holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, fell 72 percent in its second weekend. The Dark Knight fell 52.5 percent in its second weekend. Under those scenarios, The Avengers would pull in $58.08 million or $98.53 million next weekend. The Dark Knight scenario is obviously what The Avengers would like to see.

2. Think Like a Man (2)
$8.11 million ($73.14 million)
Honestly, the rest of this weekend's box office number really don't even matter. The four non-The Avengers movies in the top five barely even broke $20 million. That said, Think Like a Man has now collected a respectable $73.03 million considering the movie only had a $12 million budget.

3. The Hunger Games (3)
$5.59 million ($380.61 million)
How many weeks (days?) does The Hunger Games have left as the top-grossing movie of 2012? I say it has until The Avenger's third weekend.

4. Pirates! Band of Misfits (2)
$5.50 million ($18.67 million)
Now, I actually have a theory about who saw this movie. Walking into the theater before seeing The Avengers, I accidentally walked by The Avengers line in the hallway and entered into my screening's theater. Pirates! Band of Misfits was finishing up. I'm sure they somehow counted me.

5. The Lucky One (4)
$5.37 million ($47.78 million)
Who actually saw this movie last weekend? I'd make some joke about single women who didn't have husbands or boyfriends to drag them to The Avengers, but every girl I know who's seen The Avengers loved it.

Next week's predictions:
1. The Avengers
2. Dark Shadows
3. Think Like a Man
4. The Hunger Games
5. The Lucky One
