AMC Greenlights 'Breaking Bad' One-Hour Prequel Series 'Better Call Saul'
Like pretty much every character on Breaking Bad, the fate of Saul Goodman is still up in the air. While Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan won't hint at whether or not Saul makes it out alive, AMC has plans to tell us the story of how Saul became Albuquerque's greatest lawyer. On Wednesday, the network announced that it had finalized plans for a one-hour prequel series currently titled Better Call Saul.
AMC should be thankful that Breaking Bad will continue is some form after the series wraps up in a few weeks. The network is losing Breaking Bad and, after 2014, Mad Men too. With the exception of The Walking Dead, AMC hasn't had an easy time finding a new hit series. When you subtract the people watching just to see Breaking Bad previews, Low Winter Sun hasn't really been a winner.
In addition to Better Call Saul, someone also needs to make my other Breaking Bad spinoff idea happen: An entire show about Walt Jr. and Brock going on breakfast adventures. I'm tentatively calling it Breakfasting Bad.
"As conceived, the new series is based on the show's popular Saul Goodman character with the working title Better Call Saul," the studio and network confirmed in a joint statement, adding: "plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White's lawyer."According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Odenkirk will continue to play Saul, with Breaking Bad writer/producer Peter Gould serving as showrunner. It's funny to consider that the idea of a spinoff featuring Saul began as a joke and has now become a reality.
