Rob Riggle May Get a 'Modern Family' Spinoff
It's bad enough that Modern Family just keeps recycling plot lines, but now there's a chance ABC will take that behavior to entirely new extreme. On Friday (sorry, I was traveling), Deadline reported that the network is exploring a Modern Family spinoff that would star Rob Riggle. The series would be built around Gil Thorpe, the realtor character played by Riggle during Modern Family's fourth season.
I guess this is what happens when you keep rewarding Modern Family's unoriginality with Emmys for Outstanding Comedy. This is pretty much the same thing as giving kids participating trophies, eliminating grades and telling everyone that they're special and then being shocked when they grow up to be selfish adults.
Do we really need another Modern Family starring Riggle? Look, Riggle is great in small doses, but his characters — Gil Thorpe included — are meant to be one-note, loud-mouthed oafs. Modern Family's current characters are already pretty stereotypical. Let's not base an entire series on another one.
