Did Daniel Craig Nab a 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Role? Is There an Obi-Wan Kenobi Spinoff in the Works?
We know him by the name Bond (James Bond), but will Daniel Craig soon be going by a name in a galaxy far, far away? According to a Metro report (via Making Star Wars), Craig has already shot a "mystery role, which involved him heading to Pinewood Studios in secret for two days last week."
Normally, I'd consider a rumor like this to be highly dubious. The fact that Making Star Wars is passing it along makes me feel that it may be true. The guys over at Making Star Wars have been killing it lately and should be considered one of your best sources for Star Wars: Episode VII news right now.
That Metro report claims that Craig "begged" Episode VII director JJ Abrams for a role in the upcoming Star Wars sequel and that "fans might not even guess which part Craig is playing as his face won’t even be on screen."
"Daniel is close friends with JJ Abrams. He asked for some sort of secret cameo role — and was happy to have his name left off the posters," a source told The Sun. "Fans will love playing the guessing game trying to work out which covered-up character is Daniel."
Based on that quote, I'm guessing that if Craig is in Star Wars: Episode VII, it'll be in a very minor role, possibly one that they cover up with CGI.
Speaking of Making Star Wars, the site reported over the weekend that Lucasfilm is tossing around the idea of a spinoff focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
"Obi-Wan Kenobi — I've heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works," a source told Making Star Wars. "For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I'm hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie."
We've previously heard rumors of Star Wars spinoffs focused on Boba Fett, Yoda and Han Solo. This is the first Obi-Wan Kenobi has come up as a possible spinoff character. It makes sense, though. Kenobi has long been a major Star Wars character, introducing us to the Force in the Original Trilogy and taking us through the events leading up to Anakin Skywalker's fall in the Prequel Trilogy. From what we've heard in the past, Ewan McGregor would be up for the challenge of playing Kenobi again, too.
"Yeah. Of course. I mean, if they needed me, I would be up for it. Of course. If Obi-Wan Kenobi's in them, it can't be Alec Guinness, sadly, anymore, so I would do it," McGregor told the Washington Post in December 2012. "I wouldn't want someone else to do it. But maybe he wouldn't be ... maybe he's not going to be in them; I don't know how that works. Maybe I'll be a hologram here or there. I don't know."
