'Almost Pizza': The only funny part of last night's SNL

This has been a weirdly up-and-down season of Saturday Night Live. We've had some instantly classic episodes like Melissa McCarthy's and Jimmy Fallon's. And we've had some downright awful ones like Ben Stiller's and Channing Tatum's. Then there's the a third kind of episode — the episodes where the hosts seem to be trying but the writers really aren't. Charlie Day and Jason Segel have to be the two biggest examples of this kind of episode from this season. Really funny people who got pushed to the background of sketches or given weak material.

I wouldn't quite put Sofia Vergara's episode in that category, but it was close. The writers used a lot of old tricks like the Manuel Ortiz Show and (ugh) Gilly. Even the Little Miss Poundcake commercial got another airing. It was funny the first time, but not the fourth.

An SNL commercial for "Almost Pizza" was probably the funniest part of last night's episode.
