Will Marvel Challenge Box Office Record with 'The Avengers' Directors Cut?
SuperHero Authority is reporting that Disney and Marvel may be preparing to release the director's cut of The Avengers in theaters this August. While we already knew that we would be getting director Joss Whedon's three-hour version of The Avengers on Blu-ray, the move to re-release the film would be news.
The Avengers is less than $100 million away from passing Titanic and less than $200 million away from passing Avatar. Remember that this is the movie that made $200 million its opening weekend and $100 million its second weekend. Could The Avengers rough up another $200 million in a second release?
Personally, I'd go back and see The Avengers in theaters a few times. One, I want to see the director's cut on the big screen. And two, if my business went toward knocking James Cameron's two movies from their current spots in the record books, I'd gladly contribute.
As SuperHero Authority points out, this is only a rumor right now, but it would be a very smart move on Disney and Marvel's parts. No. 3 on the all-time domestic box office chart is nice, but it's been 15 years since a non-Cameron film had that top spot. A lot of us would love to see The Avengers be the one to end their reign. (Or The Dark Knight Rises next month, if Batman is up to that challenge.)
