Weekend Box Office Roundup (August 17-19)

1. The Expendables 2 (N)
$28.59 million ($28.59 million)
This past weekend was an odd one at the box office. Three new releases broke into the top five, but none of them really did blockbuster business. Most surprisingly for me was seeing The Dark Knight Rises drop out of the top five, landing at No. 6 with $11.01 million. This bring the film's overall domestic total up to $409.79 million, which is pretty impressive. It's just ... weird, especially since The Dark Knight didn't drop out of the top five until its ninth weekend.

The Expendables 2 opened lower than The Expendables did back in 2010. The original grossed $34.83 million. Plans have already been made for The Expendables 3, but I'm curious to see if that'll happen in light of the second installment's lighter opening weekend gross.

2. The Bourne Legacy (1)
$17.06 million ($69.62 million)
Jeremy Renner's Bourne debut took quite a tumble in its second weekend, falling over 55 percent. I enjoyed The Bourne Legacy and still think that the Renner version of the franchise has the potential to expand the Bourne universe and continue the series. Hopefully a dismal second weekend won't kill that idea.

3. ParaNorman (N)
$14.09 million ($14.09 million)
To be completely honest, the marketing for ParaNorman and Frankenweenie have blended together in my mind. Every so often, I actually have to remind myself that they're different movies. Critics seem to like ParaNorman, which means it might be a player in a shallow Oscar for Best Animated Feature pool.

4. The Campaign (2)
$13.13 million ($51.44 million)
A couple friends mentioned that they were planning on seeing The Campaign this past weekend, and the best response I could give was a "meh." The Campaign is the kind of movie that you're not going to tell people to stay away from, but you're also not going to tell them to go see it.

5. Sparkle (N)
$11.64 million ($11.64 million)
The reviews have not been good for Sparkle. While it's not on my list of movies to see, I bet in the scope of movies starring American Idol alums it's better than When Justin Met Kelly, right?

Next week's predictions:
1. The Apparation
2. The Expendables 2
3. Premium Rush
4. The Bourne Legacy
5. Hit and Run
