'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Wrapping Up Its Cartoon Network Run; Lucasfilm Delays Seth Green's Series

With Star Wars: The Clone Wars wrapping up its fifth season in a rather dramatic fashion last weekend, fans were left wondering if, in light of Disney's purchase of Star Wars, the series would be back for a sixth season in the fall. Lucasfilm answered that question on Monday, announcing that the studio wouldn't produce anymore episodes for Cartoon Network.
After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series. While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we're continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content.
Lucasfilm also announced that Star Wars Detours, an animated comedy series from Seth Green and his Robot Chicken team, had been delayed "until a later date," pushing any chance of ever seeing that series until after Star Wars: Episode VII hit theaters. Honestly, it's a good thing that Star Wars Detours basically got canceled. It always seemed like a bad move for the franchise.

The Clone Wars wrapping up will be a loss for fans of Star Wars, though. Read why the series was the best thing to happen to Star Wars in a long time and check out a clip from one of those "new Clone Wars story arcs" that Lucasfilm has promised we'll eventually get after the jump.

While the series kicked off poorly with an awful theatrical release, The Clone Wars matured into some of the best new Star Wars stories Lucasfilm has told in a long time. I would take The Clone Wars' version of Anakin Skywalker over Hayden Christensen's version any day. The past few seasons of this show were every thing that fans had hoped the Prequel Trilogy would be. The show was often dark and often dealt with the horrors and ambiguity of war.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars did what the Prequel Trilogies were never able to do. While the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the galaxy's turn against the came off as rushed in Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars spent five seasons building that story up, with the final episode of Season 5 making it clear that Anakin and the galaxy had a growing list of reasons to not trust the Jedi Order.

The clip that Lucasfilm released on Monday shows that The Clone Wars still has stories to tell, and that the show was only getting to get darker. Hints of Order 66? Just another piece that would have made Revenge of the Sith stronger. I hope that we really do get to see a few final tales from The Clone Wars. What happened to Ahsoka Tano after she left the Jedi Order? What did Emperor Palpatine have planned for Darth Maul after the fallen Sith surrendered to him? Can we expect to see either Ahsoka or Maul in the Sequel Trilogy?

While Star Wars: The Clone Wars may be done, it revitalized the franchise, making new fans of millions of kids. Who knows, if it wasn't for The Clone Wars, maybe Disney wouldn't have purchased Lucasfilm and put a new trilogy into production?
