Disney Picks 'Kon-Tiki' Directors to Helm 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Fifth Voyage

When Capt. Jack Sparrow takes to the high seas for a fifth voyage, he'll have a new set of directors guiding his journey. Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are Disney's picks to follow Rob Marshall as director of Pirates of the Caribbean 5, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Disney's choice continues the growing trend of studios handing off big-budget tentpole films to directors who have made their names on smaller films, with Chronicle's Josh Trank taking over Fantastic Four, Monsters' Gareth Edwards helming a Godzilla reboot, (500) Days of Summer's Marc Webb finding success with The Amazing Spider-Man and Safety Not Guaranteed's Colin Trevorrow in charge of Jurassic Park 4. Ronning and Sanberg's Kon-Tiki not only scored an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film, but it was also Norway's highest grossing film of 2012.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is set to hit theaters on July 10, 2015. Johnny Depp will be on board, but it remains to be seen if any of the franchise's other actors and actresses return too. Either way, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will most likely have a fancier title by then.
