BOX OFFICE REPORT (JULY 5-7): 'Despicable Me 2' Celebrates Fourth of July With a Huge Weekend; 'The Lone Ranger' Fizzles Out

Is the Era of Johnny Depp over? When Dark Shadows flopped last year, it was pretty obvious that moviegoers were tired of watching Depp team with director Tim Burton, but until this past weekend, Depp was still a box office star on his own. When it comes to first weekend grosses, The Lone Ranger turned in one of the biggest tentpole flops that we've seen in a long time. Remember John Carter last year? John Carter even made more during its first weekend than The Lone Ranger.

While The Lone Ranger was having a disastrous Fourth of July weekend, Despicable Me 2 had the fourth best opening weekend in the history of animated movies, trailing only Shrek the Third's $121.63 million, Toy Story 3's $110.31 million and Shrek 2's $108.04 million.

1. Despicable Me 2 (N)
Weekend gross: $85.52 million / Total domestic gross: $142.08 million / Percent change: NA
The popularity of the Despicable Me movies has grown immensely since the first movie debuted in 2010. While the original Despicable Me brought in an impressive $56.40 million, the sequel blew that number away. I'm sure we can expect an announcement of Despicable Me 3 any second now. Oh wait. There's a Minions film coming in December 2014.

2. The Lone Ranger (N)
Weekend gross: $29.43 million / Total domestic gross: $48.94 million / Percent change: NA
When it costs $215 million to produce a movie, it should probably gross more than $30 million during its first weekend. Or more than $50 million during a long Fourth of July weekend. The Lone Ranger is an absolute flop. You can choose from a handful of causes. Foolish enough to pit itself against Despicable Me 2. Johnny Depp-in-makeup movies don't perform well anymore. The movie couldn't decide if it wanted to be a Pirates of the Caribbean-type family movie or a movie that had massacres, intense violence and hints of cannibalism and rape. In fairness, though, The Lone Ranger isn't as awful as people are saying it is.

3. The Heat (1)
Weekend gross: $25.00 million / Total domestic gross: $86.40 million / Percent change: -36.1
In its second weekend, The Heat dropped a respectable 36.1 percent, keeping the movie on pace to cross the $100 million barrier. The Heat sequel is kind of a no-brainer.

4. Monsters University (1)
Weekend gross: $19.59 million / Total domestic gross: $216.13 million / Percent change: -57.0
After topping the box office charts for two weekends, Monsters University plummeted 57 percent to No. 4 this past weekend. It's sad to see Pixar's latest movie drop like that, but with Despicable Me 2 opening, it's not a surprise. Animated movies pull from the same pool of moviegoers, and after everyone saw Monsters University the past two weekends, they were ready to move on to something new.

5. World War Z (3)
Weekend gross: $18.20 million / Total domestic gross: $158.76 million / Percent change: -38.9
C'mon, World War Z, keep plugging along. These zombies can give Brad Pitt a $200 million movie.

Next week's predictions
1. Grown Ups 2
2. Despicable Me 2
3. Pacific Rim
4. The Lone Ranger
5. The Heat

  1. Hate that Monsters U is going to miss $300 million. Right it's performing like last year's Brave after two strong weeks at #1. Knew Despicable Me 2 would take the crowd away, but that'll now be the #2 of summer.
