BOX OFFICE REPORT (OCT. 25-27): 'Bad Grandpa' Is Good; 'Gravity' Slips to Second Place

It took Johnny Knoxville in old-man makeup to bring Gravity down to Earth. After winning three weekends in a row, Gravity slipped to second place this past weekend, bringing in $20.3 million behind Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa's $32 million.

The rest of the box office was pretty weak. Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy's The Counselor couldn't even muster up a $10 million opening weekend, despite having Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz as its cast. Chloe Grace Moretz's Carrie slipped out of the top five in only its second weekend, falling over 63 percent from last weekend. I saw Carrie, and the movie's box office performance is much more frightening than the actual film.

1. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (NR)
Weekend gross: $32.00 million / Total domestic gross: $32.00 million /
Percent drop: NA
When compared to the trilogy of Jackass movies, Bad Grandpa had the second-best opening weekend, trailing only Jackass 3D's $50.35 million. It seems like Knoxville and company picked just the right weekend to open Bad Grandpa, hitting the lull between Gravity and Thor: The Dark World. If Ender's Game can't beat Bad Grandpa next weekend, that movie is going to have issues.

2. Gravity (1st)
Weekend gross: $20.30 million / Total domestic gross: $199.81 million /
Percent drop: 32.4
Gravity may have slipped to second place, but Alfonso Cuaron's groundbreaking film is just a few bucks away from crossing the $200 million mark at the domestic box office. Pretty impressive for a movie about a single astronaut dealing with the moral quandary of being stuck in space alone.

3. Captain Phillips (2nd)
Weekend gross: $11.80 million / Total domestic gross: $70.07 million /
Percent drop: 28.1
There just doesn't seem to be excitement around Captain Phillips. I'm not sure if it's because the movie had the misfortune of following closely behind Gravity, but there just doesn't seem to be any buzz over the Tom Hanks film. Whenever people ask me for movie-going suggestions, I'll gush about Gravity, but offer a "Yeah, it's a good movie" endorsement for Captain Phillips.

4. The Counselor (NR)
Weekend gross: $8.00 million / Total domestic gross: $8.00 million /
Percent drop: 26.7
I still can't figure out how I feel about The Counselor. With its cast, Scott and McCarthy, I was expecting a lot, but I don't think the film delivered. I'm not sure if I wasn't impressed with the movie or just disappointed that it didn't live up to my expectations.

5. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (5th)
Weekend gross: $6.10 million / Total domestic gross: $100.61 million /
Percent drop: 36.9
After five weekends, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 has slipped almost $8 million behind where the original animated movie was at this point.

Next week's predictions
1. Ender's Game
2. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
3. Gravity
4. Free Birds
5. Last Vegas
