19 Movies Are Submitted for 2013 Oscar for Best Animated Feature Race

The Academy has a bunch of complex rules when it comes to the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Sometimes there are three nominees. Sometimes there are five nominees. Sometimes Shrek beats Monsters Inc., which makes zero sense.

Studios have to submit there films for the Animated Feature category, and on Tuesday, the Academy announced that 19 movies had been submitted for consideration: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Ernest and Celestine, The Fake, Free Birds, Frozen, Khumba, The Legend of Sarila, A Letter to Momo, Monsters University, O Apostolo, Planes, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie — Rebellion, Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury, The Smurfs 2, Turbo and The Wind Rises.

Obviously, some of these films have zero chance of winning an Oscar much less getting nominated for one. Planes has a 27 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was despised by pretty much every critic. Odds are Disney's Frozen will win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2014, but we'll let these other 18 movies think they have a chance for a few months.
