Is Jon Hamm Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'?

Even though those Johnny Depp rumors from a few days ago wound up being false, has Marvel already cast the lead role in Doctor Strange? According to This Is Infamous, not only is Jon Hamm at the top of Marvel's list to play the Sorcerer Supreme, but the Mad Men actor has already been cast.

There are still reservations about Hamm fronting such a big piece of Marvel’s future, but those nerves seem to surround every choice Marvel makes for their leads until their respective films are in production and things settle in nicely.
Most of the issues seem to be with Hamm’s age (42), but let’s remember that Robert Downey Jr. was right around the same age when IRON MAN was released theatrically, and that worked out well for everyone involved. DOCTOR STRANGE had originally been written for a younger actor in the lead, but there’s nothing in the early drafts of the script that couldn’t be altered to accommodate Hamm. Needless to say, it’s not a deal-breaker.

I'm still torn on the veracity of this news. This Is Famous is a relatively new site, run by a former Ain't It Cool News writer. They broke the news that the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie would have the Dead Men Tell No Tales subtitle back in August. While its expected to be a part of Phase Three of the Cinematic Universe, Marvel has yet to actually announce Doctor Strange officially. Obviously there's no director attached to a movie that doesn't exist. I'm not sure if Marvel would cast a lead in a franchise without having a director on board to give input. Maybe Marvel does want to get in the Hamm business, but I think they would wait to make sure they have a director with the same vision.

That said, we've been hearing for awhile that Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige is all about making Doctor Strange the centerpiece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future. With Robert Downey Jr.'s contract being just for the next two Avengers movies, there won't be any more Iron Man installments (not until they recast the role, that is). Maybe the Michael Douglas/Paul Rudd-led Ant-Man could anchor Phase Three, but Feige is high on Doctor Strange. Hamm is a guy who has yet to get his big movie break, which puts him right in Marvel's roundhouse.

There was also a report on Wednesday by The Daily SuperHero listed Hamm and Mila Kunis as two actors Marvel was allegedly interested in bringing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so This Is Infamous isn't alone on pushing this rumor.
