OSCAR NOMINATIONS: 'American Hustle' and 'Gravity' Lead with 10, '12 Years a Slave' Follows with 9

The Academy announced its nominations for the 86th Academy Awards on Thursday morning, and unlike in past years, there weren't any huge surprises. Sure, there were snubs, but they were snubs that people saw coming.

As expected, American Hustle, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave were the heavyweights come Oscar nomination times. American Hustle and Gravity both scored ten nominations, and 12 Years a Slave was close behind with nine. Overall, the Academy nominated nine films for Best Picture, making it the second year in a row they wound up with that number.

Thanks to the crowded nature of the acting categories this year, big names like All Is Lost's Robert Redford got squeezed out. When I made my predictions for this Oscar nominations, I said that Meryl Streep basically gets an automatic spot now, which means the candidates for Best Actress are competing for four open slots. Emma Thompson was the odd person out in that category, with Saving Mr. Banks getting all around ignored by the Academy.

Director David O. Russell once again delivered a film that scored nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and all four acting categories, matching the feat that he accomplished with Silver Linings Playbook last year with American Hustle this year.

Fans of Lee Daniels' The Butler scanning the list of nominations should give up now — the acclaimed film scored zero nominations on Thursday, with Oprah Winfrey getting pushed out of the Best Supporting Actress category by Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine). For a film that got so much early buzz, what happened to The Butler?

A kind of major shocker was that the Academy left Monsters University out of the Best Animated Feature category. I'm not alone in thinking that Monsters University was a better Pixar film than Brave, which won Best Animated Feature last year. Kind of a snub.

And for your sad closing thought, know that you live in a world where The Lone Ranger got two Oscar nominations this year and The Dark Knight Rises got none last year.
