Live, Die, Repeat: 'Edge of Tomorrow' Trailers Puts Tom Cruise in Sci-Fi 'Groundhog Day'
People can mock Tom Cruise all they want for his private life and personal eccentricities, but it's hard to deny that the guy's still a giant movie star. Whether we're talking about a longtime franchise like Mission: Impossible or a new hit like Oblivion, Cruise remains one of the most reliable stars in cinema. I'm not afraid to admit I'm excited to see his next movie, Edge of Tomorrow, especially not after the film got another engaging trailer on Tuesday.
Repeatedly, it seems like the best way to quickly explain the plot of Edge of Tomorrow is to say that it's some kind of Groundhog Day/Oblivion mashup. Based on everything I've seen from the movie, that seems accurate. Cruise plays a soldier in the future who, thanks to an encounter with his alien enemies, dies every day only to awake and relive that day. After finding a soldier who knows about the time loop (played by Emily Blunt), Cruise's character takes advantage of his new power to train against the aliens.
Edge of Tomorrow opens on May 30. The movie is directed by Doug Liman and stars Cruise, Blunt and Bill Paxton.
