OSCAR RECAP: 'Gravity' Takes Home the Most Awards but '12 Years a Slave' Wins Best Picture

The 2014 Oscar season is officially over, closed out last night with a historic (but kind of tame) Academy Awards ceremony. 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture, becoming the first film helmed by a black director (Steve McQueen) to do so. Gravity was the night's other big winner, capturing Oscars in seven of the nine categories it was nominated in. Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron became the first Latin American director to win Best Director.

Ellen DeGeneres' second time hosting the Oscars went pretty smoothly. The show was a departure from last year's ceremony, with DeGeneres opting for safe over Seth MacFarlane's edginess. Some of DeGeneres' bits — taking group selfies and ordering pizza — were cute but went on for way too long. Oh well, at least she wasn't Billy Crystal.

Last night's Oscar ceremony was also apparently the grand unveiling of the new John Travolta robot. The creation needs some work, though, as it wasn't properly programmed to say Idina Menzel's name.
