REPORT: JURASSIC WORLD Director Colin Trevorrow to Helm STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

For most directors, having your sophomore film breaks just about every box office record possible would be the high point of your career. For Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World's monstrous success was just the beginning — he's reportedly got Star Wars: Episode IX on his plate now.

Trevorrow will be introduced by Lucasfilm at their Comic-Con panel on Friday night, according to a Heroic Hollywood report. The studio isn't planning on showing any new footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens at Comic-Con, but it looks like the big news will be Trevorrow helming Episode IX and possibly some information about the third Star Wars Anthology movie.

Choosing Trevorrow to direct the final installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy continues Lucasfilm's trend of snatching up-and-coming directors for the post-George Lucas era of the franchise. JJ Abrams was somehow always the logical choice for The Force Awakens, but he came with a much more established resumé. By going with Rian Johnson (Looper) for Star Wars: Episode VIII, Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) for Star Wars: Rogue One and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) for Star Wars: Han Solo, Lucasfilm as scooped up a flock of directors that any studio would love to have working on their films. The only blip so far has been Josh Trank (Chronicle, Fantastic Four), who bailed on his Anthology movie.

Jurassic World got its share of criticism when it came to character development and poor depiction of women, so worrying about Trevorrow's effect on Star Wars: Episode IX is fair game. Don't be surprised if Lucasfilm announces that Trevorrow is directing the movie from a script by Johnson. When the first reports that the Looper director was attached to Episode VIII got out, there was some confusion over whether Johnson was writing and directing both Episode VIII and Episode IX or just directing Episode VIII while writing both installments. Let's see if we get some clarity on the matter at 8:30 p.m. ET today.
