Andrew Garfield Wanted Spider-Man to 'Hook Up' With the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Andrew Garfield was an amazing Spider-Man. Unfortunately, he was stuck in two movies that (despite their titles) weren't very amazing. Garfield brought an awkward humor to Peter Parker that Tobey Maguire could never match, understanding that the character isn't supposed to be emo. (Or launch into dance numbers.)

The actor's time as Spider-Man is over, though, now that Spider-Man has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the webslinger debuts in Captain America: Civil War, he'll be played by Tom Holland. While Spider-Man introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something fans have wanted for years, losing Garfield was a blow.

The actor chatted about the new Spider-Man with Uproxx, revealing that he had actually been pushing for Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe himself.

"I've been petitioning to hook up with Marvel since the beginning," Garfield said, "so I'm really glad they're finally doing it."

When pushed to reveal whether there was ever a chance he would continue playing Spider-Man, Garfield avoided the subject.

"To be honest [pauses], all the ins and outs of what happened is a more tender conversation that maybe I don't want to talk about in public in a press situation," Garfield told Uproxx. "But all I can say is that I'm stoked to go and watch a Marvel film of Spider-Man."

I can see why Garfield doesn't want to talk too much about the behind-the-scenes drama that surrounding Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures reaching a deal to share Spider-Man. Those were obviously hush-hush negotiations, and I wouldn't be surprised if the studios were talking at a level above Garfield.

Was there a chance that Garfield could've stayed on board as Peter Parker? Maybe. If The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't happen, I think we could've seen Garfield continue in the role. Maybe one giant lizard running amok in New York City wasn't enough to garner the Avengers' attention. Once you throw in a giant Oscorp conspiracy, Electro attacking the city and a new Green Goblin throwing girls off clock towers, there was no way Marvel Studios were going to make that nonsense canon in the Cinematic Universe.
