'Lego Batman' Spinoff Movie Fast-Tracked by Warner Bros.

Chris Pratt's Emmet may have been the star of The Lego Movie, but it was Will Arnett's Batman who stole the show. Arnett's Batman was so popular that Warner Bros. has fast-tracked a spinoff movie featuring the character, The Hollywood Reporter wrote on Friday.

According to the site, Lego Batman has possibly already stolen The Lego Movie 2's release date of May 26, 2017, and could even take Lego Ninjago's Sept. 23, 2016, release date. Arnett will be back to voice Batman, with The Lego Movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord will produce the spinoff. Chris McKay, who was the animation supervisor on The Lego Movie and was slotted to direct the sequel, will now helm Lego Batman.

This all sounds great until you get to the part where THR notes that Dark Shadows and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter scribe Seth Grahame-Smith will write Lego Batman. The Lego Movie stands as one of the best films of 2014 — can the guy who wrote a movie about Johnny Depp being a vampire maintain that level of quality?

If Lego Batman does get moved up to 2016, Warner Bros. will have two Batman movies on its schedule for that year, with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opening on March 25, 2016. Would anyone be surprised if Lego Batman does better than Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck's take on the character?

UPDATE: Miller confirmed the news of Lego Batman on Twitter.
