Weekend Box Office Roundup (April 6-8)

1. The Hunger Games (1)
$33.11 million ($302.45 million)
The Hunger Games passed the $300 million mark this weekend, making it the sixth fastest film to do so, taking 17 days to hit the milestone. The Dark Knight still holds the record for fastest to $300 million, getting there in just 10 days. (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did it the second fastest, but took 14 days.) With The Hunger Games making the kind of money it has, you'd think Lionsgate shouldn't have an issue giving Gary Ross a couple extra million dollars to come back and direct the sequel, Catching Fire.

2. American Reunion (N)
$21.51 million ($21.51 million)
The latest installment in the American Pie series became the first to not debut at No. 1. If I had to guess, I'd say that the same demographic that went and saw the original American Pie back in 1999 either doesn't pay to see movies in theaters in 2012 or was too busy see The Hunger Games again.

3. Titanic 3D (N)
$17.29 million ($25.65 million)*
I'm trying to figure out if Titanic's third-place (re)debut represents the end of the 3D re-release boom or was just a result of strong competition. The Lion King won the box office during its first two weeks in 3D re-release, but since then, Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace and Titanic have been afterthoughts at the box office.

4. Wrath of the Titans (2)
$14.73 million ($58.61 million)
Wrath of the Titans is completely lagging behind its predecessor, bringing in just better than half what Clash of the Titans had through its opening two weekends. I know that script work has begun on the series' third installment (what comes after "Wrath"? "Smash"?), but you have to wonder if Wrath's lackluster box office performance will kill that project.

5. Mirror Mirror (3)
$11.10 million ($36.77 million)
Is anyone shocked that Mirror Mirror barely made a mark at the box office? The positive Rotten Tomatoes rating surprised me, but it wasn't enough to bring in moviegoers. It'll be interesting to see how the year's second take on Snow White, Snow White and the Huntsman, goes when that hits theaters on June 1.

Next week's predictions:
1. The Hunger Games
2. The Cabin in the Woods
3. American Reunion
4. Titanic 3D
5. The Three Stooges

*Of course, Titanic's 3D gross will eventually count toward the film's overall gross, which now stands at $626.43 million.
