BOX OFFICE: 'Madagascar 3' and 'Prometheus' Top Strong Weekend
For the first time in weeks, the weekend box office was led by two strong debuts, with Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Prometheus topping the chart. After flops like Battleship and Dark Shadows, the summer box office looked like it was in trouble. Strong openings by Men in Black 3 and Snow White and the Huntsman in addition to this past weekend should end any worries the studios were having. After a surprise Friday loss to Prometheus, Madagascar 3 surged at the box office and won the weekend with $60.35 million. Prometheus finished with a better-than-expected $50 million.
In box office milestone news, The Hunger Games (remember that one?) crossed the $400 million mark this weekend. For weeks, The Hunger Games was 2012's top-grossing film, but the Jennifer Lawrence vehicle is now more than $160 million behind The Avengers for second place.
