Jay-Z Will Score 'The Great Gatsby'

When Baz Luhrmann is directing a film, you can always expect a few unconventional decisions. In the hands of a director like Tom Hooper or Stephen Spielberg, The Great Gatsby would be a sweeping film, shot in 2D and scored by a traditional film composer. Luhrmann doesn't quite play by the same rules as those directors. We already knew that the director's version of The Great Gatsby would be in 3D, and based on the first and second trailers for the film, it was clear that Luhrmann had something up his sleeve when it came to the soundtrack. Kanye West and Jay-Z's No Church in the Wild was getting a lot of play.

Here's how it all makes sense now. Jay-Z has been confirmed to be working on the score for The Great Gatsby, according to a Film Stage report.
Word had it that Prince and Lady Gaga may make some contributions, but now The Bullitts aka the brainchild of singer/songwriter/producer Jeymes Samuel has hit Twitter with some revealing information.
Already a spotlight in the trailers, and his music even featured as motivation during production, none other than Jay-Z is reportedly working on the score. Tweeting yesterday, Samuel said, “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”
While Luhrmann's adaption of The Great Gatsby is going to be a nightmare for high school English teachers, I can't wait to see how this one comes together. The film comes out on May 10, 2013, so we're at least in the right year now.
