Oscar Facts of the Day: A Few Notes About the Dolby Theatre and the Ceremony Itself
Every year, the Academy pulls off a (hopelessly) flawless night, orchestrated by a team of over-caffeinated, detail-oriented perfectionists. From the first photograph on the red carpet to the last glass of champagne, every single detail has been meticulously thought out.
Here are a few facts about those little details:
- The Dolby Theatre (formerly known as the Kodak Theatre) is the 10th venue to have hosted the Academy Awards. The 85th Oscars will be their 12th time hosting the ceremony.
- Each year, the Dolby Theatre fills 3,332 seats and 20 opera boxes with Oscar attendees.
- The Dolby Theatre will be under contract to be home to the Academy awards until 2033.
- The red carpet at the Dolby Theatre is approximately 500 feet long and 33 feet wide.
- On Sunday night, 1,000 lobsters will be served for dinner, and 1,200 bottles of champagne will be popped (1,201 if you include the bottle chilling in my fridge).
- Roughly 4,000 miniature chocolate Oscars will be served at the awards ceremony. They are decorated with 7 kg of edible gold dust.
- More than 18 kg of caviar will be served to attendees.
- Oscar seat fillers are each paid $125 per hour to keep the theater looking filled.
