Mickey Mouse Cartoons Are Back: 'Croissant De Triomphe' Kicks Off New Series of Animated Shorts

As a kid, I watched a ton of Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts. Mickey's Trailer, Mickey and the Seal, Lonesome Ghosts, The Brave Little Tailor — it didn't matter which short, there was a very good chance that my mom had recorded it on a VHS, and I had it in my collection.* Despite being the the iconic Walt Disney character, Mickey hasn't been around much these past few years. The last cartoon short he starred in was 1995's Runaway Brain, which wasn't all that great.

It was welcomed news this week to hear that Disney was planning on releasing a series of new Mickey Mouse cartoons. The series will be made up of 19 shorts and will executive produced and directed by Paul Rudish, the man behind popular cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls. The Disney Channel will air these shorts, with programming kicking off on June 28, 2013.

To publicize the new shorts, Disney released Croissant De Triomphe this week. While the style of the cartoon is quite different from those old-school Mickey Mouse shorts that I mentioned, the tone and humor is very familiar.

*Back in the day, we only had like four TV stations, so people who use VCRs** to record shows and specials that they liked.

**VCRs? They were like old-school DVRs that used large cassette tapes. For reasons I don't know, no one ever used "VCR" as a verb like they do with "DVR" now. I wish people did.
