Should Ben Affleck Suit Up? Marvel Confirms That It Now Holds Movie Rights to Daredevil
It's been ten years since Daredevil last graced movie screens, with the Ben Affleck film not connecting with moviegoers, thus sending the property back to the drawing board. In August, rumors that Fox was about to lose the rights to Daredevil began circulating online, and some outlets reported that Marvel was even willing to allow Fox to hold onto Daredevil in exchange for giving up rights to Galactus and the Silver Surfer. The thought was that Marvel wanted Galactus and the Silver Surfer to supplement its Guardians of the Galaxy-led cosmic expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While those rumors proved to be false, Marvel's Kevin Feige confirmed to Newsarama on Monday that his studio had reacquired the rights to Daredevil. No trade, just the fact that Fox couldn't get a new movie together before their deadline to do so. This is why Sony rebooting Spider-Man so quickly — they knew that rights to the character would revert to Marvel if they didn't get moving.
Does this mean that Matt Murdock will be joining the Avengers for their next outing? Well, not exactly. Or, not yet at least.
Feige didn't hint at what the plan was for Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The obvious plan would be to relaunch the Daredevil film franchise, with a movie coming during Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some voices online think that Marvel would be best suited to create a Daredevil TV show, giving the character a law drama/superhero series. With Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the works, Marvel already has set its sights on expanding the Cinematic Universe to the small screen.
Personally, I want to see a Daredevil movie again, and I want to see the character join the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. No one is doing what Marvel is doing right now when it comes to movies. Let's get some new blood in there.
