BOX OFFICE REPORT (JUNE 7-9): America Rejects 'The Internship,' Sends 'The Purge' to No. 1

American moviegoers claimed a great victory this past weekend, sending the two-hour-long Google commercial/movie The Internship to a fourth-place debut. Moviegoers very often fork over huge chunks of cash to see crappy, lowest-common-denominator movies, but they didn't fall for The Internship. The unfunny Vince Vaughn-Owen Wilson reunion was a complete bomb, a fair punishment for a studio's attempt to get people to pay to see a giant advertisement.

Meanwhile, The Purge, a movie that cost only $3 million to make, won the weekend while making 12 times its budget. The weekend also saw two movies cross the $200 million mark, with Fast and Furious 6 and Star Trek Into Darkness both achieving the milestone. Iron Man 3 brought in $5.79 million to bring Marvel's latest offering within $6 million of the $400 million mark.

1. The Purge (N)

For a rather unremarkable movie, The Purge managed to accomplish quite a lot this past weekend. Thanks to a lot of social media buzz, The Purge not only came in No. 1, but it knocked off a big-budget comedy (The Internship) in the process. With Fast and Furious 6 bringing in $19.76 million, The Purge could have won the box office with just $20 million. Instead it blew that number out of the water.

2. Fast and Furious 6 (N)

$19.76 million ($202.95 million)

As I mentioned above, Fast and Furious 6 crossed the $200 million mark this past weekend, becoming just the second movie in the franchise to do so. Fast Five made $209.84 million during its entire box office run, a number Fast and Furious 6 should race past over the next few weeks.

3. Now You See Me (2)

$19.50 million ($61.37 million)
Is Jesse Eisenberg a box office star now? It's hard to pinpoint what led to Now You See Me's box office success, as the movie didn't have a marquee star. Will Now You See Me be the beginning of a new phase of Eisenberg's career?

4. The Internship (N)

$18.10 million ($18.10 million)
In a perfect world, The Internship would have grossed zero dollars. Nothing. Considering that all The Internship could muster was a fourth-place opening, I'll live with the fact that the movie made what it made.

5. Epic (5)

$12.10 million ($84.16 million)
