My Whole Brain Is Crying: Donald Glover Might Not Return for 'Community' Season 5

After last season of Community, it would be reasonable that the show's stars could be frustrated with with the way things went. According to a Vulture report, it was this frustration that pushed Sony to bring show creator Dan Harmon back, only a year after firing him.

The most widely reported rationale for his return, reported by several media outlets and confirmed by Vulture via our own sources, is that the show's cast, led by Joel McHale, heavily lobbied Sony to seek a rapprochement with Harmon. The belief among the actors was that the show was "less special" without Harmon guiding the ship, and his return would help energize the gang for a fifth season.

Fans of Community knew that something was off with Season 5, and it looks like the cast did too. With Harmon coming back, everything's OK now, right? Well, there could be one more wrench thrown into Community's clockwork. Donald Glover is considering not returning.

Vulture has heard from multiple sources that series regular Donald Glover is still making noises about not wanting to return for the full fifth season, even with Harmon back in the fold, so he has more time to pursue his Childish Gambino career. Reps for Glover did not return Vulture's calls; a Sony publicity spokesperson would only say, "Donald Glover is under contract for Season 5 of the show."

Honestly, we shouldn't be surprised that Glover wants out. He started Community when his biggest claim to fame was being a 30 Rock writer. An Emmy-winning 30 Rock writer, but still not a public face. Since Community premiered, Glover has seen his rap alter ego, Childish Gambino, go big, got his own stand-up special on Comedy Central and has a development deal for his own show with NBC. Community's fourth season didn't really give the actor anything great to work with, so I can see why he may be ready to go.

All of that said, Glover is still under contract for Season 5. Unless that changes, we should be able to expect one more season of Troy Barnes.
