BOX OFFICE REPORT (JULY 12-14): America Screws Up and Sees 'Despicable Me 2' and 'Grown Ups 2' Instead of 'Pacific Rim'
Bad, America. Very bad. Guillermo Del Toro spends a whole bunch of time creating an awesome giant robots-vs.-monsters movie, and how do you thank him? By choosing to see Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2 instead, leaving Pacific Rim to settle for a third-place opening weekend. I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed in you, America. No. Scratch that. I am angry at you. Grown Ups 2 over Pacific Rim? Really? REALLY? C'mon, America. Our Founding Fathers didn't fight to create this nation so that Adam Sandler could make a ton of money by making movies that are pretty much one giant fart joke. This is why the rest of the world makes fun of us behind our collective back.
If you bought a ticket to see Grown Ups 2 this weekend, I hope that your TV gets stuck on reruns of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Actually, nevermind — you'd probably enjoy that.
1. Despicable Me 2 (1)
Weekend gross: $44.75 million / Total domestic gross: $229.34 million / Percent change: -46.4
In just two weekends, Despicable Me 2 has already pulled itself within $25 million of the original domestically. Despicable Me made $251.51 million total while it was in theaters. On top of that, Despicable Me 2 is less than $10 million away from passing Monsters University, an event that seems like a certainty now. Monsters University has dramatically slowed down at the box office since Despicable Me 2's debut last weekend.
2. Grown Ups 2 (N)
Weekend gross: $42.50 million / Total domestic gross: $42.50 million / Percent change: NA
I liked things a lot more when Sandler movies were flopping at the box office. When Jack and Jill and then That's My Boy opened to weak numbers, it looked like the world was finally rejecting Sandler's lazy brand of humor. I guess we're cool with that stuff again. Jerks.

3. Pacific Rim (N)
Weekend gross: $38.30 million / Total domestic gross: $38.30 million / Percent change: NA
The good news? Pacific Rim's $38.30 million is the biggest opening of Del Toro's directorial career, topping Hellboy II: The Golden Army's $34.54 million. The bad news? Pacific Rim has an estimated budget of $190 million. Pacific Rim is going to have stick around for a long time if it has any chance of making that budget back.

4. The Heat (3)
The Heat crossed the $100 million mark this weekend, becoming the third consecutive Melissa McCarthy movie to accomplish the feat. The actress has been on quite the run, beginning with Bridesmaids' $169.11 million and then Identity Thief's $134.51 million.
5. The Lone Ranger (2)
Weekend gross: $11.14 million / Total domestic gross: $71.10 million / Percent change: -61.9
Geez, The Lone Ranger dropped 61.9 percent from its first to second weekends. With a drop like that, the movie's chances of crossing $100 million don't seem great. If The Lone Ranger fails to do that, it'll be the third straight Johnny Depp movie to make less than $100 million since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Next week's predictions
1. Turbo
2. Red 2
3. Despicable Me 2
4. The Conjuring
5. Grown Ups 2
