TRAILER: 'Calvin and Hobbes' Documentary Explores Meaning of Bill Watterson's Iconic Comic Strip

Here at Popculturology, we're big fans of Calvin and Hobbes. Just last week, our Seth Pohorence paid tribute to the iconic comic strip, and I'm plotting a purchase of the massive hardcover collection of the entire series. It's no surprise that I was excited to hear today that Dear Mr. Watterson, a documentary about Calvin and Hobbes' legacy, earned a release date of Nov. 15.

Dear Mr. Watterson was funded through a Kickstarter project that raised $96,772, almost double its goal of $50,000. The documentary features cartoonists such as Pearls Before Swine's Stephan Pastis, Bloom County's Berkley Breathed and Foxtrot's Bill Amend along with other pop culture figures like Seth Green sharing what Bill Watterson's strip meant to them. According to the movie's website, the film's goal is to explore the question, "How did a simple comic strip become so meaningful to such a massive and diverse group of people, and in such a short span of time?"

Sadly, it doesn't appear that Watterson himself participated in the documentary. Not a shocker, as the cartoonist is notoriously private, basically going into hiding after Calvin and Hobbes ended in 1995. I bought the book Looking for Calvin and Hobbes a few years ago and was disappointed to realize that Watterson had nothing to do with it.

Dear Mr. Watterson will be in some theaters and available on-demand on Nov. 15. Head past the jump to check out the trailer for the film.
