Marvel May Want Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Play Doctor Strange, But That Doesn't Mean It'll Happen
If you were on the Internet on Monday, you probably heard the rumor that Marvel Studios wants Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Doctor Strange in the movie that'll most likely be announced at Comic-Con this month. Yes, Gordon-Levitt would be fantastic. Yes, Marvel would jump at the chance to sign the actor up for a huge role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here's the problem though — that entire story is just based on a rumor that Marvel would like to have the actor. Not that they've talked to him. Not that they've made an offer. Not that he's on board.
Unfortunately, this rumor was started by Latino-Review, a site that has become known for claiming exclusive scoops and then giving stories that really can't be proven or disproven. Awhile back they claimed a scoop that Harrison Ford would return for Star Wars: Episode VII. That'll probably happen, but that wasn't a hard one to predict. And unless Latino-Review could prove it then, that scoop doesn't count. Oh, and the site is often just plain wrong. Another recent scoop was that Christopher Nolan was going to run Warner Bros.' entire Justice League franchise and that not only was Christian Bale returning to play Batman but that the actor would be featured in an after-credits scene in Man of Steel. Never happened. One hundred percent wrong.
Look, I'd like to see this rumor be true. Gordon-Levitt already had a chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he passed on the offer to play the Guardians of the Galaxy role that eventually went to Chris Pratt. This story is like you saying you'd like to be an astronaut. Sure, you'd probably love to go into space, maybe visit the moon. Could it happen? Under a very specific set of circumstances, probably along the lines of the plot of Armageddon. Is it going to happen? No. File this story under "wishful thinking."
