BOX OFFICE REPORT (MARCH 14-16): 'Mr. Peabody' Takes Top Spot, 'Need for Speed' Can't Keep Up
Weekend gross: $21.2 million / Total domestic gross: $63.2 million /
Percent drop: 34.2
With not much in the way of new releases this weekend, Mr. Peabody and Sherman turned a moderate slide of 34.2 percent into a second-weekend box office championship. The movie flipped places with 300: Rise of an Empire. You know what this means? There's at least one executive at DreamWorks Animation crying for a sequel now.
2. 300: Rise of an Empire (1st)
Weekend gross: $19.1 million / Total domestic gross: $78.3 million /
Percent drop: 57.6
After winning the box office its first weekend in theaters, 300: Rise of an Empire tumbled 57.6 percent, dropping to second place. That's a pretty big drop — does Warner Bros. have poor word of mouth to blame? Need for Speed was probably going for the same audience, but it's not as if that movie cleaned up this weekend.

3. Need for Speed (N)
Weekend gross: $17.8 million / Total domestic gross: $17.8 million /
Percent drop: 46.7
Aaron Paul may be better at making meth than he is at racing cars. Also, I'm not very good at separating actors from the characters they've played in TV shows and movies. For example, why do people keep stealing members of Liam Neeson's family? That said, I'm pretty sure Need for Speed could have been a huge blockbuster if the movie was advertised solely through commercials featuring Paul yelling, "Bitch!"

4. Non-Stop (3rd)
Percent drop: 32.9
There was a scene in The Lego Movie where Neeson's Bad Cop said, "Get off my train." That line immediately made me think of Harrison Ford in Air Force One. I don't know why it took me this long to connect that back to Neeson dealing with a plane hijacking in Non-Stop. I bet the studio behind Non-Stop was cursing fate for their movie coming out two weeks too late to capitalize on that plane that disappeared.
5. Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club (N)
Weekend gross: $8.3 million / Total domestic gross: $8.3 million /
Percent drop: NA
Percent drop: NA
Yikes, just $8.3 million for a Tyler Perry movie? His movies used to be huge. Out of the 16 films that were branded with Perry's name, Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club has the 15th worst opening weekend. The past three Perry-branded movies have all failed to crack $20 million on their opening weekends.
Next week's predictions
1. Divergent
2. Muppets Most Wanted
3. Mr. Peabody and Sherman
4. 300: Rise of an Empire
5. Need for Speed
