Rooney Mara in Talks to Play Tiger Lily in 'Pan'
Here's a bit of casting news that will get people discussing race-based casting decisions: According to TheWrap, Rooney Mara is in talks for the female lead in Pan, Warner Bros.'s upcoming Peter Pan origin story. The issue? The female lead is Tiger Lily, who isn't quite the same ethnicity as Mara.
Mara would join a cast that already has Garrett Hedlund playing Hook and Hugh Jackman playing Blackbeard. Peter Pan himself has yet to be cast. TheWrap reports that Pan director Joe Wright "is planning to create a world that is very international and multi-racial, effectively challenging audiences' preconceived notions of Neverland and reimagining the environment," which I guess is accomplished by casting three white actors.
Interestingly enough, Mara's sister, Kate Mara, has been cast in the Fantastic Four reboot, which is experiencing its own race casting controversy.
