BOX OFFICE REPORT (JULY 4-6): 'Transformers 4' Leads a Weak July 4th Weekend

1. Transformers: Age of Extinction (1st)

The Transformers movies usually own the July Fourth weekend, but Transformers: Age of Extinction couldn't fully live up to that history. The fourth installment of the franchise won the weekend, but turned in the lowest second weekend of any Transformers movie, falling very short of the $47.1 million brought in by Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011. Age of Extinction's 63.6 percent fall between weekends was also the biggest second-weekend crash in franchise history.

2. Tammy (N)

Melissa McCarthy has never been a standalone movie star — she's always been a part of an ensemble cast or even a duo. The actress' first stab at opening a movie on her own came up short. Tammy was panned by the critics and failed to live up to the opening weekend accomplishments of Bridesmaids ($26.2 million), Identity Thief ($34.6 million) and The Heat ($39.1 million). Maybe McCarthy should stop allowing herself to be caricatured as the woman who just makes loud noises and falls down in her movies.

3. Deliver Us From Evil (N)

Weekend gross: $9.5 million / Total domestic gross: $15 million / 
Percent drop: NA
Deliver Us From Evil delivered the lowest opening weekend debut of director Scott Derrickson's career, trailing the opening numbers of Sinister, The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Luckily for Derrickson, he'll have Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange movie coming up in a few years. If the power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe holds, Derrickson should have a very nice opening weekend number to add to his resumé.

4. 22 Jump Street (2nd)

Over the past few weeks, we've already looked at how 22 Jump Street is now the second highest grossing movie of Phil Lord and Chris Miller's careers. What's also interesting is how well the movie has performed against many of 2014's potential blockbusters. 22 Jump Street now ranks 8th among 2014 films, outperforming films like Divergent ($150.6 million), Noah ($101.2 million), Mr. Peabody and Sherman ($111.1 million), 300: Rise of an Empire ($106.6 million) and Muppets Most Wanted ($51.1 million). Yes, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill's latest has outgrossed the adventures of Kermit and the gang by over $100 million.

5. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (3rd)

Weekend gross: $8.8 million / Total domestic gross: $140 million / 
Percent drop: 33.9

For the third consecutive weekend, How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailed the pace of its predecessor. Over four weekends, the original How to Train Your Dragon had pulled in $158.3 million on its way to a lifetime gross of $217.6 million.
