Sony Delays 'Amazing Spider-Man 3' Until 2018, Will Release 'Sinister Six' in November 2016

Sony's not ready to wave the white flag on its Spider-Man franchise just yet. With rumors swirling that the studio had canceled Sinister Six and was on the verge of sending rights to the character back to Marvel Studios, Sony announced on Wednesday that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will hit theaters in 2018 and Sinister Six will open on Nov. 11, 2016.

Of course, just because Sony has set a release date for these movies doesn't mean everything is OK. The studio once had Spider-Man 4 slotted for release, but that film wound up getting canceled. And it was just last week that Amazing Spider-Man 2 scribe Roberto Orci said that he didn't "know what their plans are for that franchise," referring to Sony and Spider-Man.

Will Andrew Garfield even want to still play Peter Parker that far from now? The actor will turn 35 in 2018. For comparison, Tobey Maguire turned 32 in 2007, the year Spider-Man 3 opened.

It pains me to say this, as I've always loved the Spider-Man franchise, but I'm rooting against Sony and these movies now. After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and after seeing how the studio wants to turn a single character into a web of thinly spread out films, it's clear that Spider-Man needs to go home to Marvel Studios. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is so strong, and with films like Guardians of the Galaxy coming out, it doesn't show signs of stopping. Fans of Spider-Man deserve to see the webslinger hanging out with the Avengers.
