BOX OFFICE REPORT (OCT. 24-26): 'Ouija' Scares Up a Small Weekend Win
1. Ouija (N)
Weekend gross: $20 million / Total domestic gross: $20 million /
Percent drop: NA
When there are no big releases in a weekend (sorry, Keanu Reeves), something has to win the weekend. For the past weekend, that winner was Ouija. (Sorry, Keanu Reeves.) Based on the board game, Ouija delivered a critically derided horror film. When it comes to recent horror films with October release dates, Ouija made pretty standard money. Carrie opened to $16.1 million last October and Sinister opened to $18 million the October before that. I'm still not sure if Ouija's $20 million opener is low enough to discourage studios from making more movies based on board games or not. Battlefield — considered a huge disaster — managed to open to $25.5 million.
2. John Wick (N)
Weekend gross: $14.2 million / Total domestic gross: $14.2 million /
Percent drop: 32.6
Is Keanu Reeves back? Critics love John Wick, but moviegoers didn't really show up for its opening weekend. From the interviews the actor has been giving the past week, it really sounds like Reeves want to get back into mainstream movies. Could Marvel Studios come calling for Doctor Strange?

3. Fury (1st)
Weekend gross: $13 million / Total domestic gross: $46.1 million /
Percent drop: 45.2
With $13 million in its second weekend, Fury is now director David Ayer's highest grossing film at the domestic box office. The movie passed End of Watch's $41 million lifetime gross. That bodes well for Ayers' future directing Suicide Squad for the DC superhero cinematic universe, right?

4. Gone Girl (2nd)
Percent drop: 36.6
Gone Girl is about to set a personal best for a director too, with its $124.1 million domestic gross less than $4 million away from passing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button's lifetime domestic gross to become David Fincher's highest grossing movie.
5. The Book of Life (3rd)
Weekend gross: $9.8 million / Total domestic gross: $29.9 million /
Percent drop: 42.4
Percent drop: 42.4
The Book of Life has made a measly $29.9 million over its first two weekends. Disney and Pixar animated films do that opening day.
Next week's predictions
1. Nightcrawler
2. Ouija
3. Saw
4. John Wick
5. Gone Girl
