SUICIDE SQUAD Cast Revealed: Jared Leto Is the Joker; Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie Join

Jared Leto will officially have the difficult task of following in Heath Ledger's footsteps as the cinematic version of The Joker. Warner Bros. announced the cast of Suicide Squad on Tuesday, revealing that Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne will join Leto.

Smith will play Deadshot, Hardy will play Rick Flagg, Robbie will play Harley Quinn, Courtney will play Boomerang and Delevinge will play Enchantress.

"The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one," Warner Bros. Pictures President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman said in a statement. "David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer's amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero."

That's quite the cast. Leto's take on The Joker will be the most talked about aspect of Suicide Squad, but it shouldn't overshadow the fact that Smith is making a career-reshaping move by joining this picture. Director David Ayer's career is filled with movies like Training Day, End of Watch and Fury — not the crap like After Earth that Smith has become known for the past few years.

Suicide Squad opens on Aug. 5, 2016.
