Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland Among Six SPIDER-MAN Reboot Hopefuls

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are getting closer to landing the next Spider-Man. The studios have narrowed the field of actors vying for the role down to six teenagers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

THR reports that Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe all participated in "a secretive, all-day screen-testing process" that took place on Saturday in Atlanta with Marvel's Kevin Feige, Sony producer Amy Pascal and Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo present.

Speculation over who will follow in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as the next Spider-Man has run wild since Marvel and Sony announced that the character was joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War and a new Spider-Man trilogy that will launch in 2017. Latino-Review's Umberto Gonzalez erroneously reported earlier this month that Butterfield had scored the gig, but several industry reporters were quick to say that the studios hadn't made a selection.

After casting 40-year-olds to play Peter Parker in the last five Spider-Man movies, Sony is going young with this pick. The two biggest names in this field, Butterfield and Holland, are both 18.

According to THR, Marvel and Sony have looked at over 1,500 actors for this role and, while the studios are expected to make a selection early this week, they could pass on all six in the most recent report.
