Tilda Swinton in Talks to Join DOCTOR STRANGE as the Ancient One

Besides Black Widow and the Scarlet Witch, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been heavy on male characters. If a new report is true, the studio is set to start changing that with Doctor Strange — even if it means turning a male character into a female one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tilda Swinton is in talks to join Doctor Strange as the Ancient One.

In the comics, the Ancient One is a Tibetan mystic who trains Stephen Strange as the next Sorcerer Supreme. The character was introduced in 1963, and has always been a man. THR reports that Marvel Studios was originally looking for an actor to fill the role but recently "rethought" the part to suit Swinton.

Doctor Strange is scheduled to be the second movie in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hitting theaters on Nov. 4, 2016. Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Doctor Strange and Scott Derrickson is directing. Filming is expected to begin this November.

Adding Swinton to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a huge move. Swinton won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton and has appeared in franchise films like The Chronicles of Narnia.
