JURASSIC WORLD Reaches $500M Faster Than Any Film in History While TED 2 Flops

Jurassic World won the box office again this past weekend, and in doing so added a few more records to its already impressive portfolio. The movie grossed $54.2 million to hold off Inside Out and easily defeat Ted 2, putting Jurassic World's domestic total at $500.1 million.

Jurassic World becomes just the fifth movie to ever crack the $500 million mark at the domestic box office, joining Titanic, The Dark Knight, Avatar and The Avengers. The latest Jurassic Park movie accomplished this feat in record time, reaching $500 million in just 17 days. The previous record for quickest to $500 million was when The Avengers broke the mark in 23 days.

Through just three weekends, Jurassic World is already the fifth highest grossing film in domestic box office history. Not only is that hugely impressive for a film that many guessed would top out at $250 million domestically, it also puts Jurassic World in prime position to challenge Avatar's all-time domestic record of $749.8 million. Jurassic World still has a long way to go, but it's three-quarters of the way there.

At No. 2, Inside Out had just as great of a weekend as Jurassic World. Pixar's latest offering fell just 42.2 percent to gross $52.1 million over its second weekend. Until Minions comes along in two weekends, Inside Out should keep adding some big numbers to its domestic total.

Things weren't so great for Ted 2. With the original Ted grossing $54.4 million its opening weekend in 2012, box office analysts predicted that the sequel should open with at least $50 million this past weekend. Ted 2 disappointed, opening to just $33 million. When you're up against Jurassic World and Inside Out, that's not enough to compete. A 47 percent rating over at Rotten Tomatoes likely hurt Ted 2's chances at the box office, especially when its predecessor clocked in at 67 percent at Rotten Tomatoes.
