A Fantastic Flop: FANTASTIC FOUR Gets Clobbered at the Box Office

After months of bad buzz, the Fantastic Four reboot finally hit theaters this weekend — and quickly proved that all that bad buzz was dead on. Armed with a whopping 9 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Fantastic Four opened with just $26.2 million. That wasn't even enough to hold off Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation in that movie's second weekend.

Fantastic Four is the new Batman & Robin. Actually, that's kind of insulting to Batman & Robin, a movie that scored the top spot at the box office when it opened with $42.9 million. The Batman & Robin flop took Batman off the big screen for almost a decade. Will Fantastic Four do the same thing to the family of superheroes? Fox already has a Fantastic Four sequel on the calendar for June 9, 2017, but after the critical and financial beating that this movie has taken, there's no way the studio can justify going forward with a sequel.

Is this the moment rights to Fantastic Four revert back to Marvel Studios? After years of declining box office results with Spider-Man, Sony Pictures made a deal with Marvel Studios to bring the webslinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The three Fantastic Four movies have now opened to $56.1 million (2005's Fantastic Four), $58.1 million (2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) and now $26.2 million. That's not a positive trend.

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation held the top spot for the second weekend in a row, grossing $29.4 million to bring its domestic haul to $108.7 million. The latest Mission: Impossible movie still ranks fifth all time among the franchise's five movies. There's a good shot Rogue Nation will pass Mission: Impossible III's $134 million total within the next week.

Jurassic World update: The movie is still at No. 3 on the all-time domestic chart. Jurassic World grossed just $1.9 million in its ninth weekend, bringing its total to $635.6 million. It looks like the movie has run out of the steam needed to catch Titanic's $658.7 million.
