BOX OFFICE: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' Dominates July 4th Weekend
As I've mentioned on numerous occasions, I hate comparing holiday weekend box office results. It's never a fair comparison, since Tuesday releases, holiday openings and/or six-day weekends are never going to play out the same. It's ridiculous to even try to compare records. That said, The Amazing Spider-Man continued to dominate whatever version of the box office you were keeping track of this past weekend, taking home $60 million over the traditional weekend frame.
Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man's technical opening weekend ranks fourth among the four Spider-Man movies, but some of these films have opened on Fridays and some have opened during the week. If we're just looking at three-day opening weekends, Spider-Man 3 ranks No. 1 with $151.12 million, Spider-Man ranks No. 2 with $114.84 million and Spider-Man 2 ranks No. 3 with $88.16 million.
If I'm Sony, I'm happy with The Amazing Spider-Man's opening numbers. Through Sunday, the film has now taken in an estimated $140 million, which is very good for a franchise reboot. The studio accomplished what it set out to do, both keeping rights to the Spider-Man franchise and setting up the character for future installments.
