'The Man of Steel' Superman shield revealed

Warner Bros. unveiled the logo for next year's Superman reboot, The Man of Steel. For the most part, it's hard to screw up the Superman shield. If I remember correctly, the shield is Superman Returns had tiny Superman shields imprinted on it. The shield in the Christopher Reeve movies was pretty flat.

What should be interesting about The Man of Steel's interpretation of the Superman shield is that, from what I've read, it's not going to be an "S" that stands for Superman. This time around, the shield is possibly going to be a Krytonian symbol that just happens to look like an "S." Earthlings assume it's an "S" and start calling him Superman. Many of the big Superman runs of the past ten years, like Superman: Birthright and All-Star Superman, also took this approach, with Superman: Birthright making it a Kryptonian symbol for "hope." Honestly, this makes a lot more sense than an alien visitor showing up and just randomly wearing a suit with an "S" for "Superman" on it.

I'm really looking forward to the first trailer for The Man of Steel. The movie itself doesn't come out until June 14, 2013, so it might be awhile until we get a trailer though. I loved Zack Snyder's adaption of Watchmen but wasn't impressed by Sucker Punch. Henry Cavill is going to give audiences a version of Superman and Clark Kent that's very different from the Reeve/Brandon Routh versions. Here's hoping The Man of Steel goes for a powerful — even angry — Superman instead of the emo Superman in Superman Returns. At the very least, we know that this movie won't have a Lex Luthor who has been reduced to just wanted to seal a real estate deal.*

*This is actually one of my biggest pet peeves about all the Superman movies. Lex Luthor is a genius who believes that only he can save humanity. To him, Superman is alien menace standing in the way of Luthor fulfilling his destiny. The Superman movies have made Luthor into a joke of man who just wants to acquire a lot of land, and — oh, yeah — just doesn't like Superman. Seriously, that needs to stop. I want The Man of Steel II to deliver the real Lex Luthor.
